Organisation

'Sharing the past, debating the present and creating the future'. That is Atria's motto. Atria is the institute on gender equality and women’s history.

Atria is one of the leading institutes on gender equality and women’s history

Atria promotes gender equality by dissemination of knowledge and information, through consultancy and by stimulating the social and political debate about gender equality. The ultimate goal is equal rights for women and men.

One and one is three

Atria wants to connect women’s history and information on women and gender, with policy, topical matters and politics. Atria was established in 2012, after a merger between Aletta, institute for women’s history and E-Quality, Information centre for gender, family and diversity issues.
On 28 January 2013, Atria was launched at the venue ‘Rode Hoed’ in Amsterdam.

Past, present and future

Atria houses one of the oldest collections on women and gender world-wide, and documents and preserves women’s history. Placing issues in an historical perspective makes the institute unique.

Atria has a large and freely accessible library at the Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam.

The department of Collections manages and preserves an extensive archive with, amongst others, material from various women’s organizations, diaries and audio-visual material. Visitors can borrow books and magazines, study in the library or join a guided tour of library and archive.

Atria is a center for study and looks towards to the future from a historical perspective. Staff members from our Consultancy and Advice department conduct academic and policy-related research into social trends, social and economical issues and carry out studies on policy and policy-implementation in the field of equal opportunity, diversity and ethnicity. Atria works together with – and advises – businesses, policy makers, universities, politicians and social organisations, both national and international.

Atria also caters for a wider public interested in women’s rights and history. Our Public Services offer a wide arrange of information, talks, special dossiers, audio-visual material, exhibitions and much more.
